The nation’s largest telephone and cable companies — including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner — want to be Internet gatekeepers, deciding which Web sites go fast or slow and which won’t load at all.
They want to tax content providers to guarantee speedy delivery of their data. They want to discriminate in favor of their own search engines, Internet phone services, and streaming video — while slowing down or blocking their competitors.
These companies have a new vision for the Internet. Instead of an even playing field, they want to reserve express lanes for their own content and services — or those from big corporations that can afford the steep tolls — and leave the rest of us on a winding dirt road.
The big phone and cable companies are spending hundreds of millions of dollars lobbying Congress and the Federal Communications Commission to gut Net Neutrality, putting the future of the Internet at risk.
Whether you believe this or not to be true or just scare mongering it can’t be denied what is happening in China with internet access, Viacom demanding to see everything we have watched on Youtube, and the power of people like Rupert Murdoch who owns 100 newpapers, satellite networks, Fox TV, Myspace plus other media outlets such as magazines and book publishers. According to a copy of Adbusters which I don’t usually read but picked up when I was bored at work, six corporations – News Corp, Viacom, TimeWarner, Disney, CBS and General Electric- own and control over half of the news and media that flows around the world. With all the social networking sites being taken over by bigger companies and the freedom of the Internet, (which Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, always intended the Internet to be), being in possible jeopardy in the near future what can be done to stop this and what, if it comes to it, alternatives are there?
